In 2007, I took a trip to New York City to visit my brother, who was living there at the time. I didn't own a camera. Back then, my camera of choice was one of those cardboard disposable cameras with a flash! But I knew I couldn't go to the Big Apple with a paper camera, so I bought a tiny "point & shoot" Sony Cybershot for a hundred bucks.
In New York, I took pictures of the normal stuff: Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and of course, being a huge David Letterman fan, I was able to take some pictures of the Ed Sullivan Theatre, inside and out. I would take pictures of the "touristy" things that everyone loves to go to New York to see.
But before the visit was done, I found myself snapping shots of the elderly Asian man on the subway, with his bowler hat on perfectly straight and both hands on the top of his cane, which made a straight line down to the floor between his feet. I captured a photo of a young couple on the Staten Island ferry, him staring off in deep thought while she napped with her head gently on his shoulder, both of them content in their daily routine. I took a random shot in passing of a young girl in Virgin Records sprawled out in the floor reading the liner notes of what I imagined to be the new album from her favorite band.
After I returned back to my Huntsville, AL, home, it dawned on me. I love photographing people.
So I looked into entry level cameras, sought the advice of photographers with experience, and purchased a little Nikon D40 DSLR camera. I practiced on friends. I practiced even more on strangers. I read about photography and the principles of composition, exposure, and learned as much as I could while putting as much of it into practice as I could. I learned about lighting and the different ways to modify that light to make my subjects photograph well.
I had found my passion!
